Additional Garmin MetroGuide CD ROM (Germany) Information

The Garmin MetroGuide CD-ROM for Germany contains trip and waypoint management functions that allow for effective trip planning. MetroGuide Germany contains extremely detailed city maps with street-level information with address lookup capability when downloaded to a compatible Garmin GPS device (see below for list of devices).

This software allows you to view color maps on a desktop PC, with zoom and pan functions for easy map browsing. You can create waypoints, routes, and tracks, and transfer them between your PC and nearly all Garmin GPS devices (see below for compatibility).

This CD-ROM also contains motorways, national and regional thoroughfares, roundabouts, railroads, and local roads in many areas. It also displays points of interest, such as restaurants, border crossings, petrol stations, lodging, shopping, entertainment, and emergency services. You also get shoreline detail of lakes, rivers, streams, and canals.

Other points of interest include various details, from border crossings to gas stations. And with a map-download-compatible Garmin GPS, MapSource will allow you to load map detail for addresses and business listings.

The current map coverage for Germany includes about 590,000 km of roadways (71.4% of all roads), roughly 2,720 municipalities, 1,434 major cities in street-level detail, and the area inhabited by up to 55.9% of the German population.

Downloads from European MapSource MetroGuide CD-ROMs are limited to a maximum of 32 MB. The map transfer feature is only compatible with the following units: GPS III+, 12MAP, NavTalk, GPSMAP 162, GPSMAP 168 Sounder, StreetPilot, StreetPilot ColorMap, StreetPilot III, GPSMAP 295, eMap, eTrex Vista, and eTrex Legend. A blank Garmin data cartridge is needed to upload map data to some of these units. The trip and waypoint management functions of this CD-ROM work with nearly all Garmin GPS units, excluding the GPS100 family and panel-mount aviation units.

What Customers Say About Garmin MetroGuide CD ROM (Germany):

Garmin do not make this any more. All the European maps have been combimed into a single CD package.

It's a 1999 product, based on 1995 map data. Very surprised and disappointed. DO NOT BUY. It's a WINDOWS 95, 98, NT 4.0 product. Even this offer expires on August 31, then you are completely stuck. In short, I trusted Amazon to know their stuff, and they cheated me.

Garmin does not sell it any more. The packaging mentions only GPSes that Garmin used to sell, none that they currently sell. ALL of the products with a European country name in them (France, Great Britain, etc) are OUTDATED. I guess they laid off their GPS guru. I made the mistake of ordering this product along with a new Garmin Etrex Vista a week before a UK trip.

Not even NT 4.1, not less Windows 2000 or XP. See the Garmin site.Garmin will charge you.plus shipping to upgrade to the current product, which Amazon doesn't even appear to sell.

Traveling by train, I used the product mainly to navigate on foot in the various cities I visited. As for the accuracy of the waypoints I uploaded by street address, it varied bit, but was still good enough to easily get me where I needed to go.

Saving me the frustration of burying my head in maps, and hunting for the elusive European street sign, this product virtually eliminated one of the biggest headaches of what is meant to be a relaxing time. For the purposes of this feature, the country is divided into large sections, and I had cases where to get one city, I had to upload a large section containing several megabytes of data I wouldn't use.

My only real disappointment was with the granularity of the mapping data, as it is selected for upload. Still, I found this to be a workable limitation since I could use the PC based maps to preprogram routes and waypoints for all the places I knew I would want to visit, regardless of their map section. All things considered, this product greatly enhanced my vacation.

I used this product in conjunction with the eTrex Vista unit, on a recent vacation to the UK. I found the pre-programmed waypoints of tourist sites, train stations, and even London tube stops, to be extremely accurate.

This of course tied up precious memory that kept me from uploading the data for other cities.

The maps seem more up to date, and, due to the difficulty of finding anything in France, much more useful. It also seems to have up to date restaurant and attraction info for Paris and other areas. The Metroguide software for France is more useful than the US version. I managed to find our company's new building in a new town by punching in the address, and I was able to use my emap to find it in 10 minutes from the train station.
